The Carroll Dragons breezed through the regular season and district play, finishing 10–0 for the second straight year. Now, the real work begins for this state-championship hopeful.
The Dragons face Crowley in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs Thursday, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. at Dragon Stadium. Carroll gets to open the season on its home turf thanks to its first-place finish in District 4-6A. Crowley (3-7) finished in fourth place in 3-6A.
Carroll dominated all season, posting a plus-445 point differential, best in Dallas-Fort Worth 6A competition. The Dragons earned a top-eleven spot in MaxPreps’ national rankings — the only Texas team to do so.
Few opponents managed more than two touchdowns against Carroll's defense. The lone exception was Keller on October 3, scoring 28 points (a game Carroll won, 63-48). In their final four games, Carroll outscored Eaton, Northwest, L.D. Bell and Keller Central 226–17.
Regular-season highlights:
- Receivers Brock Boyd, Blake Gunter and Brody Knowles each averaged over 60 yards per game. Gunter led with 91.7, Boyd had 90.5 and Knowles 61.6. The trio combined for 27 touchdowns.
- Boyd broke the all-time Carroll receiving record with 905 yards. He’s committed to Ohio State.
- With senior Davis Penn injured early, backup Brooks Biggers stepped up with 10 touchdowns. Penn returned to form, leading the team with 14.
- Quarterback Angelo Renda, a Pitt commit, threw for 2,936 yards and 29 touchdowns with a 77% completion rate. He also rushed for 236 yards and seven scores.
- Carroll’s defense was equally dominant, especially up front. Despite losing star end Zach Hays to an upper-body injury, Crawford Taylor filled in and finished third on the team in tackles with a team-high 14 for loss.
- Austin Bussman and Taevin Kuntz led with two interceptions apiece. As a unit, the Dragons forced 15 turnovers in 2025.
