The Southlake Carroll Dragons (6-0) defeated the Byron Nelson Bobcats (0-6) 41-17 Friday to give head coach Riley Dodge a birthday win, as well as remain undefeated in District 5-6A.
The Dragons continue to sit atop the District 5-6A rankings, with the only undefeated record.
Quarterback Will Bowers had a total of 194 passing yards, three touchdowns and a 67 percent completion rate, as he looked for Dragon Pride Player of the Week Glenn Mitchell throughout the night. Mitchell had six receptions for just under 100 yards and three touchdowns on the night.
Running back TJ McDaniel also put up big numbers, with 111 rushing yards and three touchdowns of his own.
The defense contained the Bobcat's offense, giving up under 250 the entire game. Junior outside linebacker Graham Faloona led the defense in tackles with nine.
Carroll struck first with a four-yard touchdown run from McDaniel, putting the Dragons up 7-0 early in the first quarter. Byron Nelson was not able to answer on their first possession and handed the ball back over to the Dragons.
McDaniel recorded his second touchdown of the night with a 13-yard run. An attempted two-point conversion was unsuccessful and the Dragons lead the Bobcats 13-0 near the end of the first quarter.
Byron Nelson remained scoreless going into the second quarter.
The Dragons again struck first in the second quarter on their first possession with Mitchell's first touchdown of the night – a 19-yard pass into the end zone. Mitchell's touchdown made it 20 unanswered points for the Dragons.
The Bobcats finally kicked a field goal nearing the end of the second quarter to put three points on the board, and not remain scoreless for the first half of the game.
Mitchell notched his second touchdown of the night early in the third quarter from a 17-yard pass from Bowers. The Dragons led the Bobcats 27-3.
The Bobcats responded with their first touchdown of the night midway through the third. Sophomore quarterback Hudson White ran the ball in 16 yards to put seven points on the board for Byron Nelson.
The Dragons were quick to respond with a game-high 59-yard touchdown run from McDaniel. The Dragons led the Bobcats 34-10 going into the fourth quarter.
Mitchell scored his third touchdown of the night off a 28-yard pass from Bowers after a long first possession of the quarter, putting the Dragons up 41-10 over Byron Nelson.
The Bobcats slid in one last touchdown from Noe Diawaku, but it was not enough.
Next up, the Dragons will face Keller Fossil Ridge in Dragon Stadium for homecoming Friday night.
