Senior wide receiver Brady Boyd catches a pass for a touchdown during Friday's 72-57 win over Rockwall-Heath High School. Following the game, Boyd announced via Twitter that he broke his wrist.
In the first game of the regular season, Southlake Carroll’s offense shined, scoring nine touchdowns on the night. Led by quarterback Quinn Ewers, who threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns, the Dragons recorded their first win.
Senior wide receiver Brady Boyd, our Dragon Pride Player of the Week, sponsored by Thomas & Sharon Michael | DFW Elite Realty, and sophomore running back Owen Allen proved to be stars. Boyd caught a team high of 9 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns while Allen rushed for 218 yards and four touchdowns on the night. Newcomers to the offense also showed their talent. Both tight end R.J. Maryland and wide receiver Landon Samson recorded their own touchdowns.
Maryland and Samson, along with wide receiver Josh Spaeth, caught for a total of 168 yards and those numbers will only increase in the coming weeks. After Friday’s game, Boyd announced via Twitter that he had broken his wrist.
“Gonna get an estimation on the recovery tomorrow. Appreciate all the well wishes and prayers,” Boyd says on Twitter. “But [I know] my boys got me while I’m gone.”
While the Dragon offense was the star of Friday’s game, the Dragon defense had a few great moments. The first came in the first quarter when defensive back Avyonne Jones made an interception, which eventually led to Boyd’s third touchdown of the night. Along with his interception, Jones made seven tackles — five solo and two assisted.
The other standouts on defense were senior defensive back Cinque Williams and junior linebacker Benecio Porras. Porras made 13 solo tackles and three assisted tackles and Williams made five solo tackles and four assisted tackles. Williams also kicked off the fourth quarter with a 61-yard fumble recovery touchdown.
Even though the Dragon defense had standout moments, overall, refinement is needed in the coming games. Rockwall-Heath’s quarterback Josh Hoover threw for a total of 405 yards and four touchdowns while the team rushed for a total of 299 yards and four touchdowns, according to MaxPreps. The team also made a number of two-point conversions following their touchdowns.
With Boyd out for the foreseeable future, the Dragons have their sights on the next game. Next Thursday, Southlake Carroll is set to take on Rockwall High School, a familiar opponent to the Dragons. In 2016 and 2017, Southlake Carroll came out on top 30-23 and 52-38, respectively.
It will be another quarterback matchup when the Dragons take on the Yellowjackets, currently 2-0 after a 60-38 win over Dallas Jesuit on Friday. Rockwall’s quarterback Braedyn Locke, also a part of the class of 2022 with Ewers, has thrown for 655 yards and eight touchdowns so far during the season, according to MaxPreps. He is also a three-star quarterback, according to 247Sports.
As for the team, Rockwall is currently ranked No. 15 statewide and No. 66 nationally, according to MaxPreps. As of now, Southlake Carroll is currently ranked No. 4 statewide and No. 11 nationally.
Southlake Carroll is set to play Rockwall High School on October 8 at Wilkerson-Sanders Stadium. A livestream of the game available on DragonSportsNetwork.com or the Southlake Carroll Dragon Athletics App.
