If we've learned anything about the 2014 Carroll Dragons, it's to never count them out no matter the opponent or the odds. Afterbrmany considered the Dragons underdogs in their second round matchup, including the Dallas Morning News, Hal Wasson andbrthe Southlake Carroll Dragons responded to critics by walloping Denton Guyerbr58-42 in the Area Round of the 6-A Division II playoffs Saturday Night.
Scoring on their first seven possessions Saturday night, thebrCarroll offense looked almost unstoppable as Southlake's aerial and groundbrassault combined for a total of 490 yards of offense. The game never seemed close as the Dragonsbrturned early Guyer mistakes into a 31-7 lead early in the 2ndbrquarter, all but eliminating the chance for a comeback.
Dragon Pride Player of the Game Ryan Agnew was practically flawless completing 21 of 24 pass attempts (88%) for 244 yards and a touchdown. Agnew added two more scores on the ground. Running back Li’l Jordan Humphrey notched another extremely impressive performance to his dominating tour of North Texas rushing for 182 yards onbr28 carries while piercing the end zone three times. Humphrey has also shown his receiving skills of late, catching 5 passes for 51 yards.
The Dragons receiving core provided plenty ofbrfirepower as Agnew completed passes to four different receiving options. Wide receiver Ryan McGibboney, whose presencebrhas made a world of difference for the Dragon passing game since returning frombrinjury lead the Dragons with 5 receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown. Tariq Gordon finished second on the team withbr7 receptions for 82 yards while Parker Fentriss who's blocking became a bigbrpart of the Dragon rushing attack, finished with 1 catch for 12 yards.
Despite giving up 42 points and almost 500 yards of totalbroffense to sophomore sensation quarterback Shawn Robinson, the Dragon defense foundbrways to subdue Guyer's weapons on its way to victory. The Dragon Defense forced two turnovers, onebrof which was a blown up trick play by linebacker Joel McClellan that turned intobra 37-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. Once again, Andy Chelf led the Dragon defense, brthis time with 8 tackles and four pass deflections, while his counterpart KevinbrCramer finished with 6 tackles, two pass deflections and a timely interceptionbrthat set up an early score and a scoring pace the Wildcats just could not keepbrup with.
“We told our football team all week they were going to makebrsome plays.” Said, Coach HalbrWasson. “We had to contain them and makebrthem uncomfortable at times and we were able to do that."
As Hal Wasson's ball club has now completed its second goalbrof the year; practicing on Thanksgiving the Dragons look to continue its postseasonbrsuccess Saturday when they face San Angelo Central (11-1) in the regional roundbrof the Division II playoffs. Kickoff begins at 1pm at Baylor’s McLane stadium in Waco.
