On Friday, both the Dragon offense and defense came together to triumph over the Keller Indians with a 42-10 win, advancing to a 3-1 regular season record and a 2-0 district record.
Junior quarterback Quinn Ewers continued to show off his talents, making 74% of his passes and throwing for 284 yards and four touchdowns. Almost halfway through the season, Ewers has thrown for 1,221 yards, 15 touchdowns and two interceptions so far.
Running back Owen Allen also shined with another night of triple digit rushing — the sophomore recorded 100 yards rushed and two touchdowns. He also caught one pass, which resulted in a 63-yard touchdown. Allen has rushed for 624 yards and 10 touchdowns so far on the season.
With senior wide receiver Brady Boyd still out with a wrist injury, his fellow Dragons continue to step up for the team. Junior wide receiver Landon Samson caught for 101 yards and one touchdown, bringing his season totals to 425 yards and five touchdowns. Junior tight end RJ Maryland also had a fantastic night, catching for 57 yards and two touchdowns, which brings his season totals to 256 yards and five touchdowns.
As Southlake Carroll continues to make its way through the 2020 football schedule, the young defense continues to hone their talents. As a whole, the Dragon defense kept Keller to 338 offensive yards and only one touchdown, an improvement since the team’s 44-42 loss against Rockwall.
Sophomore defensive back Logan Anderson continued to stand out, recording eight tackles and one interception, which is why we are naming him our Player of the Week, sponsored by Thomas & Sharon Michael | DFW Elite Realty. Anderson’s tackles were second only to junior linebacker Barrett Baker, who recorded 13 tackles on the night.
And senior defensive back Cinque Williams continues to prove his talents, recording six tackles and causing a fumble that junior defensive back Max Reyes — who had five tackles — went on to recover.
The work of both the Dragon offense and defense allowed senior quarterback Hunter Holden to take over for Ewers in the fourth quarter. While allowing an interception by Keller that eventually led to their only score on the night, Holden completed all of his passes and threw for 25 yards.
Following this win, the Dragons now set their sights on November 6, where they’ll take on the Keller Central Chargers on the road. Another district opponent, the Chargers are currently 2-2 on the season, according to MaxPreps.
In the past two seasons, Southlake Carroll has outscored Keller Central 84-21 — winning 49-14 in 2018 and 35-7 in 2019.
