USA Soccer
There was no fairytale ending in Poland.
The U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team's run at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup ended Tuesday in the cruelest way soccer knows how to end things — a penalty shootout, this one going Brazil's way, 5-4, after 120 minutes that could have gone either way. Ainsley McCammon's thunderous equalizer in the 63rd minute kept the Americans alive. But when Brazilian goalkeeper Thais Lima guessed right on Adames' opening spot kick, the USA's Round of 16 hopes went with it.
Buried in the box score, though, is a quieter and more significant ending. Somewhere in that Arena Katowice locker room Tuesday, Southlake's own Kennedy Fuller pulled off a U.S. jersey for the last time as a youth international. At 19, she has now aged out of FIFA's youth World Cup system entirely.
Here's why: FIFA runs youth World Cups at the U-17 and U-20 levels, each with a birth-year cutoff that determines who's eligible. The U-20 tournament, which just wrapped up in Poland, is the oldest and final rung — win or lose, once a player competes at U-20, there's no higher youth level left to play in. Fuller, born in March 2007, was age-eligible for this 2026 U-20 cycle, but she'll be too old for the next one in 2028, when the cutoff shifts to players born in 2008 or later. In other words: this wasn't just the end of one tournament. It was the last youth World Cup she'll ever play in, period — closing out one of the most decorated careers U.S. youth soccer has produced in years.
A Career Measured in Gold
Fuller captained the U-15s to a 2022 CONCACAF championship, leading the tournament in scoring with nine goals and taking home the Golden Ball as its best player. Two years later, she topped the scoring charts at the 2024 CONCACAF Women's U-17 Championship, then closed out the year with four goals at the 2024 FIFA U-17 World Cup — good enough for the Silver Boot and a bronze medal for the team.
By the time she arrived in Poland this fall, Fuller was already a rising NWSL playmaker, having turned professional with Angel City FC at 16 — the second-youngest signing in club history — before a June trade sent her to Bay FC, where she quickly became one of the league's more dangerous creative forces.
That dual life made this U-20 World Cup something of a farewell tour, and Fuller delivered: three goals, tying Alex Buck for the U.S. scoring lead, and seven FIFA youth World Cup goals total across her career — four at the 2024 U-17 World Cup, three here. It's a number the next wave of U.S. prospects will have to chase.
What Comes Next
From here, the only international team left for her to make is the full senior U.S. Women's National Team, and that jump from top youth prospect to senior call-up is exactly the path U.S. Soccer's next generation of stars usually takes.
Brazil ended the tournament for the United States on Tuesday. But for Kennedy Fuller, this ending looks a lot more like a beginning.
