A record that stood for years fell in a matter of minutes, thanks to Caden Leonard.
The Carroll senior phenom delivered a historic performance last week at the Class 6A Region I meet in Arlington,, breaking the Texas state record in the 3,200 meters with a time of 8:45.14. And he wasn't done — the following day, Leonard ran and won the 1,600 meter race in 4:05.04, breaking a regional meet record previously held by former Dragon Reed Brown.
The record-breaking run didn’t happen in isolation, but in the middle of a season defined by consistency at the highest level. Leonard has spent much of the year chasing one of track’s most exclusive milestones: the four-minute mile. He’s come agonizingly close multiple times, including a 4:00.07 indoor personal best and several other sub-4:02 performances against top national competition.
The 3,200 in Arlington unfolded at a blistering pace, with Leonard pushing the tempo throughout and ultimately separating from a stacked field. His finishing time not only eclipsed the previous state record but also ranks among the top times nationally this season.
A University of North Carolina signee, Leonard now turns his focus to the UIL State Meet, where he’ll look to cap his high school career with another championship performance.
Carroll’s distance success wasn’t limited to Leonard. Fellow Dragon Luna Gutierrez also punched her ticket to the UIL State Meet with a standout performance in the girls 3,200. Gutierrez shaved 19 seconds off her previous best to set a new personal record, a breakthrough result that now ranks her sixth all-time in Carroll program history. H
