Stewart Johnson / Snapped Dragons
For a moment this spring, one of the most storied traditions in Texas high school baseball seemed to be in jeopardy. But once again, the Carroll Dragons proved they can never be counted out.
Against all odds, the Dragons have qualified for the UIL baseball playoffs for the 28th consecutive year, extending one of the most impressive postseason streaks in the state.
Because of the UIL’s divisional split, the Dragons have been designated as the #2 seed in Division 2 for the upcoming bracket. Their reward for their regular-season finish is a bi-district showdown against the Fort Worth Boswell Pioneers. Boswell will enter the series with plenty of confidence of their own, having recently swept Mansfield Lake Ridge to claim the District 3-6A championship.
How Carroll punched its playoff ticket was nothing short of spectacular.
After a grueling start to the season where the Dragons dropped eight of their first nine district games, the postseason seemed like a distant dream. However, Coach Larry Vucan’s squad didn't blink. Carroll ignited a furious comeback in the back half of District 4-6A play, winning their final seven district matchups. They capped off this remarkable turnaround with a statement win over state-ranked private school powerhouse Liberty Christian, officially snagging the fourth and final playoff spot in the district.
