Carroll alumni Matt Gilchrest and Vincent Martino participated in stroke play on Monday and Tuesday at the U.S. Amateur Championship in Bloomfield Township, Mich. The tournament is the oldest USGA championship and was founded in the late 1800s. It is played at Oakland Hills Country Club.
Gilchrest, who played at Auburn, was a team MVP at Carroll during his time. He graduated in 2013. The Tiger finished two over par and will not advance to the next round.
Martino, who played at Houston, was a four-year letter winner for head coach Matt Glenn. He graduated in 2012. The Courger finished four over par and will not advance to the next round.
After 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday, the 312-player field was reduced to the low 64 scorers. The championship concludes on Aug. 21.
Since the inaugural event in 1895, the U.S. Amateur "has enjoyed an illustrious history of great champions," according to the tournament's official website, including Bobby Jones, Chick Evans, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods.
The USGA, according to the website, conducts the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open, as well as 10 national amateur championships, two state team championships and international matches, attracting players and fans from more than 160 countries.
