The Carroll Girls andbrBoys Cross Country teams advanced to the State Championship race afterbrqualifying at the Class 6A Region I Meet in Lubbock on Monday. For the fifthbrconsecutive year, the boy's team captured first place and a state meet bid, andbrfor the 19th consecutive year, the Lady Dragons earned a spot in thebrchampionship state race. The three-mile course at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbockbris a tough one and known for its steep hills and tight turns but the Dragonbrrunners rose to the occasion.
Head coach Justin Leonardbrsaid in a press release, “We are pleased with our performances today at thebrRegion I-6A meet. Our goal for the regional meet is to advance and be ready tobrrun our best race at the state meet and I believe we have achieved that. ReedbrBrown and Alison Esparza had great individual performances. It's anbraccomplishment for the boys to win five regional titles in a row and for thebrgirls to qualify for the state meet 19 years in a row.”
In a field of 182brrunners, the Carroll boys had all scoring runners finish in the top 25. ReedbrBrown took second place, Charlie Gardner came in 17th, MichaelbrSimcho 23rd, Michael Waugh 24th and Nicolas Fernandes finishesbrout the scoring positions in 25th place. Timou Toure (37th)brand Shea Whatley (75th) also competed. The Dragon boys team scoredbr72 points, Flower Mound 151, Keller Central 155 and El Paso Eastwood 176 andbrall will advance to the Championship State Meet.
The Lady Dragons competedbrin a very close and tough field. They had three runners finish in the top 20: AlisonbrEsparza (13th), Kayli Jones (16th) and Gillian Mortimer (18th).brClose behind were Cate Tract in 21st place and Tig Archer in 23rdbrto complete the scoring runners. Olivia Arriaza (26th)brand Sarah Odneal (28th) also competed. The Lady Dragons scored justbr86 points to come in third place. Alsobrmoving on to the state meet was first place Marcus (78 points), second placebrKeller (78 points) and fourth place Lewisville Hebron (92 points).
