There are 240 young, age 5 to 16, (mostly Southlake) swimmers participating on the Timarron Tigershark's Summer Swim Team this summer at the Timarron Bent Creek Pool, according to head coach and program director Kevin Murphy.
"Our Tigershark Program has been in place, under the current format for the previous ten years, touching the lives of many of our Southlake and Timarron residents," Murphy said of the program, which is sponsored by the Timarron Homeowner's Association and administered by Sonia Leonard of ReMax.
Murphy is also the head coach of Carroll High School's swim team, and is credited with boosting the Timarron 8-week program to what it is today by Leonard.
"The majority of our swimmers are Timarron residents but for an extra non-residents fee we do take students from other neighborhoods that live in CISD," Leonard said. "We start swim practice after school the last two weeks of school, and then when school's out we switch to mornings."
The 8-week program includes swim instruction four days per week at the Bent Creek Pool on Continental, and meets on Wednesdays at the aquatic center. Swimmers win ribbons for their races, medals from the championship meet at the end, and a medal for participation in the program.
The Tigersharks also employ about eight former Dragon swimmers, college age, to help coach.
Fridays are Fun Fridays with games and fun races in lieu of formal instruction, and snacks, Leonard said.
"At the end of the season we celebrate with a pizza party," said Leonard, a 12-year Realtor in Southlake, having lived in Timarron 15 years, selling with RE/MAX Trinity, and have sponsored the team for the last nine years. "Coach Murphy [also] assembles a team of assistant coaches from his graduating class ... I continue to be amazed at the progress the swimmers make from the first day in the water as they get daily instruction."
