The UIL competition isn’t until this weekend, but the Dragon cheerleaders have already been named champions.
On Sunday, Jan. 9, the Dragon cheerleaders went to Grapevine High School to compete at the Mustang Invitational Game Day Spirit Competition. Competing against 33 other teams ranging from 3A to 6A classifications, the Dragons won the evening after they were named the 6A Grand Champions.
“Our girls have put in nothing but hard work this season,” head coach Cassie Hopkins says. “Every day they came in and gave the best that they could, and that really showed in competition at the invitational.”
In addition to their invitational win, the Dragons also won second place in band dance, third place in cheer and third place in fight song. The Dragon cheerleaders will compete next at the UIL spirit state championships on Jan. 13-15 at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
“I want the girls to know that they should be confident in who they are not just individually, but as a team,” coach Hopkins says. “We are proud of our first place win and can’t wait to fight for the UIL state championship.”
