Many football fans are looking to Super Bowl LIV on February 2. However, the third grade Carroll Green Dragons recently won their own trophy at the 2019 North Texas Football League Super Bowl.
The Green Dragons recently played against the Argyle Eagles during the NTFL Super Bowl at the University of North Texas this past winter. Team mom Heather Nied says while grades kindergarten through second normally played flag football, this was the first year where the league introduced rookie tackle into the third grade program.
“It was a great success,” Heather says. “We knew it was going to be a tough game, but our guys practiced hard, went out there and did the job. They all performed very well.”
The Green Dragons prevailed against the Argyle Eagles 33-8 with the help of their coaches, Philip Odette, Ron Luber and David Nied. As part of becoming the 2019 NTFL Super Bowl Champions, they got to tour the Dallas Cowboys Ford Center on Dec. 12, view the Cowboys’ five Lombardi Super Bowl trophies up close and even get high fives from offensive lineman Joe Looney.
“This was no doubt very exciting for those boys,” Heather says. “It was an amazing experience for these kids.”
This is the second time the Green Dragons have won the NTFL Super Bowl, with their first win in 2017. The Green Dragons’ next season starts in August 2020.
