At preseason meetings the Dragonsbrmeet to discuss their goals for the upcoming season—the first thing on the listbris always to win the outright district championship. As Carroll cruised to a 38-14 victory overbrL.D. Bell, the team capped off an undefeated regular season and the first everbr7-6A district championship.
As the playoffs loom the Dragon passing game has looked muchbrimproved the last two weeks. QuarterbackbrRyan Agnew has taken advantage of the schedule of late throwing six touchdownbrpasses to just one interception. In his last two contests he's more than doubledbrhis touchdowns thrown in the previous eight games. He finished Friday night's game 14 of 19 forbr200 yards and three touchdowns. Consistent all year long, Li'l Jordan Humphreybradded to his spectacular year by running for 102 yards on just 14 carries. His 1,401 rushing yards breaks the Carrollbrsingle season rushing record last held by Tommy Avers. Wide receiver/CornerbackbrTariq Gordon led Carroll's receiving core with 63 yards on three catches and abrtouchdown. Senior Parker Fentrissbrfinished second on the team with five catches for 62 yards and a touchdown,brwhile junior Tommy Kane scored his first touchdown as a Dragon on a 19 yardbrreception from backup Quarterback Montana Murphy.
“I would say that at this point in the season we'vebrestablished running the ball as our identity”, said Junior Running Back Li'lbrJordan Humphrey. “With three greatbrrunning backs on the team, we are very difficult to stop offensively.”
Tim Wasson's defense continued its stout play only giving upbr156 yards in their victory over Bell. brSouthlake Carroll's defensive line led by UTSA commit King Newton andbrDefensive End Grady Sullivan provided problems for LD Bell's rushing attack limitingbrthe Blue Raiders to 119 yards on 43 carries only allowing 2.77 yards perbrrushing attempt. Dragon Pride Player of the Week JacobbrCopeland led the Dragon defense putting constant pressure on both Bell quarterbacks throughout the night. The sophomore linebacker posted 11 tackles and an impressive three sacks on the night. Outside Linebacker Joel McClellan finishedbrsecond on the team with nine tackles, one sack and a pass deflection.
The Dragons open the playoffs against Mansfield (7-3) Fridaybrnight at AT&T Stadium. Kickoff beginsbrat 9 p.m.
