It’s no secret IPAs have claimed the craft beer crown. From Deep Ellum juice bombs to crisp West Coast hop machines, they’ve dominated tap handles and fridge shelves all year long. And while there’s no knocking a well-poured IPA on a warm Texas afternoon, the seasons shift. The sun sets earlier, the air chills and suddenly, that citrusy pint feels a little out of place.
Just when you’ve hit your bitter-max, craft brewers across DFW thankfully start rolling out their seasonal heavy hitters. These aren’t just darker beers — they’re layered, inventive creations designed to be savored at a slower pace with close family and friends. Think cinnamon, cocoa, roasted Texas pecans, even pumpkin spice. They’re bold, comforting and perfect for sipping fireside, indoors and out.
Raise a glass to the cooler months — because in North Texas, beer season never really ends, it just gets sweeter.
Snickerdoodle Ale
From crisp IPAs to a buzzing tasting house near The AAC, Community Beer Co. rules the summer. However, when the weather snaps, their cookie-inspired ale is ready for the spotlight. Flavored with cinnamon, vanilla and sugar this 5.2% ABV patio-pounder throws off cozy, comfort food vibes. Community Beer Co., Dallas.
Mocha Legion
This barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout hits hard at 13.3% ABV. Be sure to schedule a ride home as its sweet coffee and cocoa notes will have you coming back for more. Community Beer Co., Dallas.
Local 3113 Oktoberfest
In addition to local faves like Aluminum Cowboy lager and Miracle Wheat, whose proceeds benefit Miracle League Southlake, Grapevine’s finest brewery puts out a delicious Oktoberfest-style Märzen. The 6.1% ABV lager exudes a deep malt character balanced by a clean, hoppy finish. Hop & Sting, Grapevine.
Pumpkin Spice Latte Temptress
The legendary makers of the highly regarded Temptress have a bevy of imperial milk stout extensions brewing. The seasonals kick off with a Pumpkin Spice Latte that features cinnamon, clove and ginger flavors. But locals in the know can’t wait for Lakewood’s partnership with Dallas favorite Emporium Pies to start pouring in November. Their Pecan Pie stout gives drinkers a warm hug of pecans, vanilla and brown sugar steeped in espresso. Lakewood Brewing, Garland.
Pony Pils
Here’s a bonus pick, for the light-minded drinking tailgater in us all. The official beer of Mustang Nation, this light and crisp American Golden Lager pairs best with a touchdown reception from SMU tight end and Dragon alum RJ Maryland. Lakewood Brewing, Garland.
Winter Warmer
After two decades in business, Cowtown’s OG craft brewer may be on the move, but their dedication to English-Style Dark Ale remains faithfully intact. Winter Warmer is an 8% ABV hearty handshake to the holiday season with malted toffee, chocolate and dark fruit notes that can only be topped by its older brother, the 10% ABV Bourbon Barrel Aged Winter Warmer. Rahr Brewing Company, Fort Worth.
The Bombers
Firemans #4 blonde put Real Ale on the map. However, when the weather cools off, look for their lineup of bold “Bombers” to hit stores – and your palate – with wallops of dark roasted goodness. Enjoy a cold night with this warming flavor forward crew: Real Heavy Scotch ale, Sisyphus barleywine ale, Commissar Russian imperial stout and Black Quad all pack a punch of 9%-10.5% ABV. Best served seated by the fire. Real Ale Brewing, Blanco.
Holiday Cheer
When it’s time to put the tree up, it’s probably time to put down a bottle of this peachy-keen seasonal from the makers of Shiner Bock. This old-style Dunkelweizen is brewed with local Texas peaches and roasted pecans for a balanced, smooth sip that is not too sweet. Spoetzl Brewery, Shiner.
3-C Porter
Brewed right here in Southlake’s Park Village, Chef Braden Wages’ flavor profiles don’t end at the menu, they’re behind the bar, too. Although the inventive 3-C Porter is available all year long, fall’s long, cool evenings are the ideal time to enjoy these toasted coconut, chili and cacao flavors. Malai Kitchen, Southlake.
