Art Algebra is bringing a fresh kind of creative energy to Colleyville.
Owned by husband-and-wife team Aatif Merchant and Aashna Bharwani, the new gallery and community space was created to make art feel more personal, approachable and connected. What began as a series of pop-ups has grown into Art Algebra’s first brick-and-mortar location, where handmade international artwork, seasonal lattes and cultural events all share the same walls.
The idea started with pieces the couple discovered while traveling. Aatif, an artist himself, had gained attention after one of his mixed-media works was selected for an international competition in Dubai. As the couple continued bringing home handmade artwork and textiles from their travels, friends and family kept asking where they had found such unique pieces.
“We realized there was a gap in the market for handmade artwork that really meant a lot to you,” Aashna says.
Rather than create a traditional gallery, Aatif and Aashna wanted Art Algebra to feel relaxed and welcoming. Each piece includes a QR code so guests can learn about the artist and story behind the work at their own pace, while the gallery’s latte bar gives visitors another reason to stop in, sip and explore.
The space has already hosted pop-up markets, yoga sessions, private events and mahjong nights, with more community gatherings planned. For the owners, those events are part of the bigger mission: creating a “third space” where people can connect through art, culture and conversation.
“We want to make the art world more accessible,” Aatif says. “You don’t need to be an art person to come in and belong.”
Located near Girly Girl Boutique, Art Algebra is already finding support from the Colleyville, Southlake and Grapevine communities. And while this is the couple’s first location, they hope it will not be their last.
“If you walk in here, scan a piece of art, learn a game or drink a coffee that inspires you, we’ve accomplished our goal,” Aatif says.
