Todd and his son Riley share more similarities than just their love of football. For one thing, both Dodges are high school coaches, with Riley first coaching with the Dragons at 29 years old while Todd started coaching Rockwall High at 32. Both have been recognized as coach of the year, Todd from "USA Today" in 2004 and Riley from the Landry Awards in 2019. And both are fathers as well as coaches, with Riley raising three children and Todd raised two, including Riley.
Yet several distinctions make this father-son duo unique to one another. While he was coaching the Dragons, Todd saw four championship wins in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006, and he was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in 2005. While he played quarterback for the Texas Longhorns at the University of Texas at Austin, Todd threw 7.9 yards per attempt, handily outpacing Riley's 6.6 college record. Todd even holds the current record for highest average gains per completion with 32.6 yards for the Longhorns.
But Riley has made just as impressive achievements as his father has. During high school, Riley made the front cover of the 2007 issue of "D Magazine." He threw 3,445 yards during his senior year, outmatching his father's 3,135 yards. He collected several accolades during his junior year in 2006, including being named a Sun Belt offensive player of the week twice and named a RISE junior of the year by ESPN. Riley even tied with Chase Wasson for the third-highest touchdown passes in Texas high school history, completing 54 during his high school career.
Although he's only been head coach for two years, Riley currently has a higher .929 winning percentage than his father does at .899. We'll have to see where the future takes these two proud Dragons, but we know we look forward to following them along the way.
