When it comes to Texas high school football, the Dragons are no strangers to making an appearance at state championships. Whether they were a 3A or 5A school, the Dragons have always proven themselves to be stiff competition and a force to be reckoned with on the football field.
Carroll’s first 3A state championship win was against Navasota High School in 1988. During their second state appearance, the Dragons beat Houston Jones High School 48-0 in 1992. Their last state championship win as a 3A school was in 1993, where they beat Cuero High School 14-6.
As a 5A school, Carroll beat Comal Smithson Valley High School twice for the state title, once in 2002 and again in 2004. They also qualified for the finals in 2003 but narrowly lost the championship by one excruciating point against Katy High School. They would later get a rematch and beat Katy 34-20 in 2005. Southlake Carroll would go on to win a three-peat in 2006 against Austin Westlake, who coach Todd Dodge would later go on to coach himself in 2014.
Southlake Carroll’s last state appearance and win would be against Fort Bend Hightower in 2011. In total, the Dragons won eight championships out of its nine state appearances. Here’s to hoping they’ll reach yet another one this fall.
