Although this year’s assembly looks different from previous ones, Carroll Senior High School still got to put together a moving tribute for Southlake’s veterans on Veterans Day.
At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, the Carroll students and administrators came together to honor their local heroes remotely through a video tribute put together by Dragon Media. After the Boy Scouts posted the colors and Dragon Choir sang the National Anthem, CSHS Principal Shawn Duhon made a few remarks honoring our nation’s veterans.
“Veterans Day is a special day for Americans everywhere as we come to recognize those who have served our country and given us peace,” Shawn says. “I am not a veteran, however, my life has been affected and influenced by veterans who have served our country. From my father to my father-in-law, I have heard many stories about their services and experiences. In almost every family, someone has fought to preserve our freedom of worship, freedom of speech and freedom to live in a democratic nation. But that freedom does come with a price.”
After Duhon's remarks, the Dragon Band performed the "Armed Forces Salute" while honoring 59 local veterans from five branches of the military. Debate Team President Rishik Bethi closed out the assembly by noting how underappreciated some veterans are and how we need to do more for them.
“Some veterans don’t get to go back to a house and a dinner set on a table waiting for them. Some veterans have their homes on the streets of the cities they’ve fought so hard to protect, because their country neglected them,” Rishik expresses. “As citizens, we need to do a better job of recognizing and accommodating for these people that have made the biggest sacrifice to us not just on this day, but every single day. They deserve more than just today. They deserve the entire year, the decade, even the century.”
