Purple represents elegance, power and beauty — words that can also be used to describe The Color Purple, now at the Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas. Their opening week was full of exciting theater-goers, lively music and an immense amount of talent. Audiences are easily swept away in the captivating performances and beautiful storyline. Billed as a show that "leaves its mark on the soul," the 2016 Tony award-winning musical revival is an experience that will charm you until the very end. It's based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and Steven Spielberg’s Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominated film starring Whoopi Goldberg. This production was adapted for the stage by Marsha Norman, a Tony and Pulitzer winner. Watching the show, you can't help being inspired by the story of Celie, a young woman who suffers many hardships and abuse while living in the South. This story takes place over 40 years as Celie uncovers what it means to love others and enjoy life, even in difficult times. After finding success for over a year (and with more than 400 regular performances!) on Broadway, The Color Purple is touring the U.S. with a fantastic cast. Many stars from the Broadway revival are returning to headline the North American tour, including Adrianna Hicks as Celie, Carla R. Stewart as Shug Avery and Carrie Compere as Sofia. The show will also feature a Grammy-winning score of jazz, gospel, ragtime and blues music, including the songs "What About Love," "That Fine Mister" and the title track, “The Color Purple.” It will be difficult to leave the show without crying a little, laughing a lot and spending some time reflecting on life. After all, the color purple — and its namesake musical — demands to be noticed. |
