Sawyer Davidson is abr7-year-old fighting cancer … but he's not battling alone. Last weekend, aboutbr200 people gathered at White's Chapel United Methodist Church in Southlake tobrlet him know that even though he’s away for treatment, he’s not forgotten.
His words “I will neverbrgive up” inspired Team Sawyer to create a “We love you” video as a reminder ofbrhow much Sawyer is loved.
The team—a handful ofbrteachers, family and friends of Sawyer— joined other supporters wearing blue, thebr7-year-old's favorite color, to make the video. Those in attendance encompassedbrstudents, parents, teachers, firefighters and dignitaries including Rep. TanbrParker and Rep. Giovanni Capriglione, Westlake Mayor Laura Wheat and formerbrWestlake Mayor Scott Bradley. Even Batman made an appearance, as did Sawyer’sbrdog Archer!
In 2015 Sawyer wasbrdiagnosed with a brain tumor caused from medulloblastoma, an aggressive form ofbrcancer. Surgery removed the tumor but he relapsed in April. Since then he hasbrreceived weeks of radiation, chemotherapy and other treatments to combat thisbrdisease.
Currently, Sawyer is outbrof the state receiving immunotherapy. He should receive the video within twobrweeks. His first-grade peers at Westlake Academy however, held him closebrthroughout the school year by placing a stuffed monkey on his desk to representbrhim while he was away.
“Just because they are inbranother state to receive treatment, doesn't mean we have forgotten about them,”brsaid Sawyer's first-grade teacher Sarah Firsching. “In fact, they are on thebrforefront of our minds daily.”
During the event, brattendees brought cards and posters for Sawyer and the group did a cheer forbrhim as 200 blue balloons were released. Afterward, the videographer recordedbrpersonal shout-outs to Sawyer. Meat U Anywhere BBQ supplied tacos and water forbrthe guests, with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward pediatric cancerbrresearch in Sawyer’s name.
Firsching said watching abrstudent fight cancer and struggle from the treatment's side effects has changedbrher significantly. “Sawyer is the strongest and toughest person I know, and I'vebrnever seen such bravery and perseverance in my life,” she said.
Firsching said she alsobrfound herself questioning why there isn't a cure for this heartbreaking diseasebrin this day and age. “Sawyer is going through such a hard fight along with manybrother children who have this terrible disease,” she said. “We want to showbreveryone, especially Sawyer, that no one fights alone and we are cheering himbron and beyond!”
