Giddy up, cowboys and cowgirls! The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo returns for 23 days of excitement and fun this month. Put on your cowboy boots and prepare for a western lifestyle experience unlike anywhere else.
Fort Worth brings the Modern West to life at every single rodeo event. Among the 25 scheduled events are the Best Of The West Ranch Rodeo, the Best Of Mexico Celebración, the Cowboys Of Color Rodeo, Bulls Night Out Extreme Bull Riding and the Texas Champions Challenge. If you are traveling with the kids in tow, take them to the Stock Show. It's not just cattle that your children can see and touch — there is also a milking parlor, a barnyard, a petting zoo, pony rides and a carnival midway filled with all sorts of rides and attractions. Not to mention three local museums are free with your grounds admission to the festival: the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, the Cattle Raisers Museum and the National Cowgirl Museum. On top of the rodeo, they have livestock, horse shows, shopping, tasty food, live music and much more.

A new exhibition explores the influence of Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) on Spanish surrealist Salvador Dalí (1904–1989). During the show, Dalí's 1938 reinterpretation of Vermeer's Woman In Blue Reading A Letter (c. 1663) will be featured alongside Vermeer's original painting. For the first time in history, Dalí/Vermeer: A Dialogue viewers will have the unique chance to see these pieces side by side. You won't want to miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. Celebration Week
Jan. 10-16 | Dallas
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of diversity, opportunity and equality is being celebrated this month at Dallas’ 41st annual MLK celebration week. The week will include a full lineup of events such as a community cleanup, a candle-lighting ceremony and the presentation of essay winners at the MLK annual scholarship and awards gala. Then on Jan. 16, around 250 nonprofits, bands, drill teams, church groups and community organizations will gather at MLK Boulevard and march in the annual parade. It will be a wonderful week celebrating Dr. King’s dream of a better tomorrow.
Jan. 18-29 | Bass Performance Hall
Giraffes, lions and birds, oh my! “The Lion King” at Bass Performance Hall is a vibrant stage adaptation based on the Academy Award-winning 1994 Disney classic. Fans will have the chance to see all of their favorite characters up close and personal, including Simba, Nala, Zazu, Timon and Pumbaa. The Tony Award-winning director Julie Taymor takes audiences on a journey filled with adventure, hope and breathtaking visuals. Forerunners For The Arts prides itself on being "a place for you and your child to learn how to steward your gift with excellence and pursue intimacy with God." In order to fulfill its mission, Forerunners For The Arts strives to become a training center for artists, musicians, dancers, actors and filmmakers. The art organization is hosting a gala for the second year in a row to benefit local artists and performers. Dance routines, a seated dinner and a silent auction will all be part of the evening's festivities.

The Southlake Public Library and Apex Arts League present Cinema D'arte, a free film screening that includes wine and delicious appetizers. This month’s film is “Frida,” a biographical drama based on the life of Mexican surrealist artist Frida Kahlo. Starring Salma Hayek as Frida with Alfred Molina playing her husband Diego, the film was adapted from a 1983 book by Hayden Herrera. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards and ended up winning two for Best Makeup and Best Original Score.
