The Library Foundation of Southlake is introducing a new literary challenge for readers to participate in this winter.
Young readers from kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to participate in Funopoly at the Southlake Public Library until Jan. 8, where they can compete in various reading challenges to earn tickets for prizes. A classic and colorful game board is repurposed with color-coded book genres atop each space, such as science and nature, trains, a magical place or pets, for kids to pick and choose novels to read in each category. As participants continue reading, they can check off their books on the “reading log.” Each book read will earn participants a ticket, while reading all the books in one colored category will earn a golden ticket for larger prizes from local businesses such as Toy Maven, Talking Animals Books or 1956 Pizza.
“We couldn’t be more excited to help encourage reading during the long winter nights,” president Lori Burr says. “The beauty of our Funopoly reading game is that it gives kids a lot of choices about the types of books they read. Ideally, it will encourage readers to choose something that might be outside their normal habits. A child who mostly reads books about animals may stretch themselves to read a biography instead just to earn a ticket. We would love to see readers exploring new genres and types of books.”
Participants can register and pick up their boards at the Southlake Public Library in town square. For more information, visit LibraryFS.org.
