The City of Southlake held a donation drive for victims of Hurricane Harvey this week.
Last week, Hurricane Harvey crashed into the Texas coast bringing about devastation that will likely take years to overcome. While we are sure you have already seen dozens of articles on how to (and how not to) donate to relief efforts, we are here to give you a local look.
Additionally, we would like to thank everyone who attended Southlake Style's September issue Preview Party hosted by Brio Tuscan Grill. Our generous host offered to match the sale of any Brio gift card, with a donation toward hurricane relief efforts. From Thursday night's event alone, $550 was raised for Best Friends Animal Society Disaster Relief and $625 for American Red Cross. Brio gave back $750 in gift cards to the guests who donated.
It's also important to remember that the impact of Harvey will be lasting. While the buzz will likely die down in a few weeks, it's vital that our efforts do not.
Grapevine Relief and Community Exchange (GRACE)
GRACE is working directly with families that have been displaced. Already this week, 20 families from the affected area have reached out to GRACE for assistance. The local nonprofit is working with all of those families to find shelter and provide them with food and other needed goods. If you would like to donate, GRACE lists the following as their most pressing needs.
- Gas cards
- New socks and underwear
- Diapers, wipes and baby formula
- Stock for the Food Pantry. GRACE provided this updated list of needed items.
All food donations can be dropped off to the GRACE Food Pantry, 837 E. Walnut Street in Grapevine, during operational hours:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 9 a.m.- 5 p.m.
Wednesday 12:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
They will be closed on Monday for Labor Day. If you wish to give to this nonprofit monetarily, click here.
Del Frisco's Grille
Sometimes giving takes on a different look than we might expect. For instance, enjoying a steak or any other delicious meal item at Del Frisco's this weekend is one way to support the Houston area. Through Monday, the restaurant will donate 20 percent of all sales in an attempt to reach its goal to donate over $1,000,000 to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.
Carroll ISD
As many Dragon parents know, Hurricane Harvey caused some travel changes for Dragon Football's season opener in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. The district is currently working on plans to help those affected by the storm. Ozarka, Carroll ISD and Rockwall ISD plan to team up at Dragon Stadium during the September 15 home game to collect supplies and bottled water to send to the Houston area.
More immediate, Dragon Football is collecting supplies on Saturday morning at the CSHS Field House parking lot from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. They have a truck coming to collect donation boxes at noon. This donation is in response to Coach Wasson's fellow coaches in Kingswood. Their football field, weight room and school hallways are underwater, and there is a desperate need for cleaning supplies. The Dragons are requesting donations of the following:
- Bleach
- Disinfectant cleaners
- Gloves (rubber gloves, latex gloves, vinyl gloves, work gloves)
- Mosquito repellant
Community Storehouse:
The Community Storehouse, a local nonprofit, is accepting donations for those currently in hurricane shelters. They need the following items:
- Travel size soaps
- Dry socks
- Batteries
- Baby items
- Nonperishable foods and snacks
- Wal-Mart gift cards
Donations may be brought to 4640 Keller Hicks Road in Keller. If you wish to give to this nonprofit monetarily, please visit communitystorehouse.org.
