Mayor Hill declares September 1, 2015, as Boy Scouts of America Troop 168 Day
Not everybody gets a daybrnamed specifically for them. But Southlake Boy Scout Troop 168 did, and thatbrday is September 1, 2015. Mayor Laura Hill officially designated this day asbrTroop 168’s day for its ongoing service to the community.
For the past five years, brthe troop has been actively involved in placing flags around the family park inbrSouthlake Town Square. The first display started on July 3, 2010, and the troopbrhas raised and lowered the flags on major holidays ever since as directed bybrthe City of Southlake.
“The opportunity for ourbrtroop to carry out this service is very important to [us]. Scouting is aboutbrteaching our young men an appreciation of responsibility to others,” saysbrHector Reyes, Scoutmaster. “While we routinely engage in community servicebrprojects, it's rare to have a chance to do something that impacts a city as abrwhole and also provides the opportunity to display our patriotism.”
Reyes admits that thebrtroop was surprised when Mayor Hill and the City Council announced that theybrwould be honoring them with a proclamation.
“We encourage our scoutsbrto be selfless and really there is never an expectation of receiving anythingbrback. The act of giving is its own reward,” he says. “But as you can imagine, brthe boys, adults and parents are very proud and grateful for the recognition. Webrhope that this will result in others hearing about our troop and come check usbrout.”
BSA Troop 168 wasbrestablished in 2002 at St. Laurence Church in Southlake. Currently, the troop isbrled by Father John Jordan of St. Laurence Church, and includes approximately 35brscouts. To date, 42 scouts have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, which is thebrhighest rank a youth scout can attain.
