September is the month for fried food. Whether you are heading out to the State Fair of Texas or fair food festival in Trinity Groves on September 15, there’s plenty of delicious fun to be had in the weeks ahead.
Southlake DPS wanted to get in on that action by frying up something of their own. So they got out the deep fryer and threw in a badge and some handcuffs. This isn’t their first time at this; last year the team tried to fry a set of handcuffs. But Southlake DPS’ Public Information Officer Brad Uptmore wanted to step up their frying game.
“With the State Fair looming this year, we thought we'd up the game and so I went scouring around for more things to fry. Captain Henninger and I sat down and started planning for it and we started remembering back when we went to the State Fair as kids,” Uptmore says. “The one constant we kept coming back to was remembering Fletcher's corny dogs and like with all of my projects, I thought I could at least ask!”
Southlake DPS called on who they refer to as the “expert foodie guru corny dog queen” Amber Fletcher of Fletcher’s Original State Fair Corny Dogs. She brought out her own famous batter, which provided a nice even brown coating to the badge and handcuffs. That was after she fed the officers on duty.
“Amber was so giving and kind and even fried up 20 corny dogs for officers on shift – BEFORE the cuffs and badge of course,” Uptmore says. “She used her batter, which stuck and obviously tasted a lot better than whatever weird stuff we had mixed up, and we had a line of officers waiting for piping hot corny dogs.”
Despite all the fun, Uptmore wanted to remind those who are traveling to Fair Park for the fair to pay attention to Dallas OD’s social media to see their warnings and suggestions. He also provided a few tips for staying safe while having fun.
“Don't have your head buried in a cell phone when walking from the parking lots to the gates and know where your valuables are – maybe even put them in unconventional places,” Uptmore suggests. “Have a plan if your family gets separated and luckily DPD does great about having officers constantly around if you need something.”
