From June 3-15 in the Southlake Public Library, the Southlake Historical Society will be hosting a pop-up exhibit that will honor the 75th anniversary of D-Day as well as share the story of Lt. Colonel Charles H. Young.
As part of the exhibit, the Historical Society is also asking relatives and friends of people who participated in D-Day to memorialize their loved ones by writing their names and units in a special book, according to the news release.
Young, whose story will be told as part of this exhibit, was a pilot who helped carry paratroopers and artillery-filled gliders to targets behind German lines, according to the news release.
After the war, he resumed his position as a pilot for American Airlines and was the editor of Grapevine Area History in the '70s. In 1995, he published a book called "Into the Valley: The Untold Story of USAAF Troop Carrier in World War II, From North Africa Through Europe."
This exhibit will include authentic WWII helmets, medals and various other items owned by UNT student, history enthusiast and Southlake resident Paul Porter, according to the news release.
Admission to the exhibit is free and library hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
