On Friday, the nation was rocked by news that 10 people had died in a shooting at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas. Southlake and the surrounding communities wasted no time in responding to the tragedy. A few hours later, 65 people gathered in Southlake Town Square to hold a vigil for the Santa Fe victims and their friends and families.
"We just all pitched in last minute," says Holly Walsh, who helped organize the event. "I brought a microphone. Someone brought posters and markers. We'll be sending the posters to Santa Fe."
Walsh is the Community Outreach and Faith Leader for the Northeast Tarrant County chapter of Moms Demand Action. The group organized the vigil in partnership with Students Demand Action. Two Carroll Senior High School students, Alanna Miller and Katie Silverman, spoke at the event, calling for legislative action with regard to gun laws. A chaplain delivered a heartfelt prayer and response.
"We were trying to honor the students who died and raise awareness," Walsh says.
