As summer vacation has come to an end, so have the seasonal efforts of GRACE’s Feed Our Kids’ hundreds of volunteers.
For the past 18 summers, the Grapevine Relief and Community Exchange program has coordinated the efforts to nourish area kids with food and a loving atmosphere while school is not in session. According to GRACE seasonal programs coordinator Beth Chernik, record heat did not slow down this mighty group from delivering over 30,000 lunches during the “hungry weeks” of summer. In many instances, the sack lunches provided were the most important meal of the day for the kids who received them.
Since its inception in 2005, volunteers have prepared and delivered nutritious sack lunches at several designated hosting sites throughout Grapevine. According to GRACE’s website, groups spend anywhere between $300-$500 during their week and could supplement their lunches with chips, fruit snacks, cookies and more.
“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you very much for a wonderful summer,” Beth says via email. “You served through the scorching heat and always brought your best volunteers, activities, meals and warm, kind, big hearts and smiles.”
It’s never too early to sign up for next year’s program, which runs from late May through mid-August. For more information, call 817.488.7099 or visit GRACEGrapevine.org.
