Savor Gastropub
Klyde Warren Park, built over Woodall Rogers Fwy., connectsbrUptown and downtown Dallas in dramatic fashion. Open since late 2013, Savor Gastropubbris a stunning all-glass restaurant situated on the north side, offering amazingbrviews of the park and the Dallas Arts District.
Savor is the primary park restaurant, bralthough sister kiosk, Relish, is also located nearby. This new gastro pub, thebrcreation of Executive Chef John Coleman — a 23-year veteran of the Ritz-Carltonbrchain of luxury hotels — offers simple, high-quality dishes using fresh, brlocally sourced items in order to create a vibrant dining experience. The newbrgreen oasis in the center of Dallas provides the ideal setting for diners tobrexperience the flavorful menu.
As you enter the restaurant, you will noticebrits wide-open feel, both inside and outside. If you look up, you'll notice meshbrceiling panels with screen-printed patterns of leaves that have indirect floodbrlighting, which gives off a diffused glow at night. The entire kitchen, bar andbrmechanicals are housed in the center of the restaurant, leaving all four wallsbras floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The bar features curves as the primary designbrelement with a wire-suspended liquor shelf sitting above the counter. There arebradditional bar height counters featuring lights atop stainless steel polesbrevery few feet. The dining area includes high-backed loveseats along the glassbrwalls with a front row view of the park and the stunning architecture of thebrArts District just beyond the park's edge.
We dined during lunch hour on a weekend, brso our choices reflect that menu. We began with the Skinny Dips — small dippingbrbowls of house-made hummus, tomato basil and pimento cheese with warm, freshbrflatbread to dip into each or to use as a platform to spread the dips. The hummusbrand the tomato basil dip were solid, but the pimento cheese was the definitebrwinner. Freshly shredded and prepared, it is much better than what you will findbrin your local market.
For one of our main entrées, we chosebrSavor's version of thebrclassic French croque-madame sandwich served open-faced with shaved ham, stoutbrbeer-soaked Gruyere cheese, a fried egg and a delicious Mornay sauce (meltedbrhalf Gruyere and half Parmesan cheese). This fork-and-knife sandwich is a decadentbrchoice with rich flavors and really hits the spot for lunch or brunch. It pairsbrvery well with a mimosa.
Our other selection, based on abrrecommendation from our server, was the Cornbread Crab Cake Sandwich. It is abrtraditional crab cake made with fresh Jonah and blue crab meat topped with anbrapple slaw on a salt and pepper bun. I paired this sandwich with a handmadebrcocktail, the Texas Peach, made of peach bourbon, lemon juice, orange Curacao, brginger and hard cider. The drink stood up well to the strong flavors yet wasbrstill light enough as a brunch beverage.
Savor is definitely a dining destinationbrwhere you don't want to miss out on dessert, so save room for one of theirbrunique offerings. You can mix and match based on the size of your group sobreveryone can try something different. Foodie Fellow choice: the NostalgicbrCookies and Milk featuring a chocolate-covered, house-made “Oreo”, nutterbrbutter and an oatmeal cream pie paired with an ice-cold glass of milk. We orderedbrtwo of these delights — don'tbrmiss out on this twist on classic cookie favorites.
This is an ideal spot for a date nightbror a night out with good friends. I hope you choose to visit Savor in Dallasbrsoon and enjoy the views around the restaurant as well as the view of thebramazing dishes served each day.
