Over 500 recipients from 41 states recently received a U.S. Congressional Award for community service, education and advocacy — and Carroll graduate Welles McDevitt is one of them.
A four-year cross-country runner and state champion, Welles has served over 525 community service hours, including over 100 hours in his senior year. Welles said he primarily volunteered for the Scholars and Athletes Serving Others (SASO) organization, as well as White’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
"I'm proud to have spent the past five years working toward the Congressional Award," Welles says. "It is a true honor to receive Congress' highest award given to young Americans."
Welles says he’s proud to have received the support of the Southlake community during his pursuit of the congressional award, including CSHS principal Ryan Wilson.
“I truly appreciate the opportunity I was given to set and achieve goals, ultimately representing my family, Southlake, Carroll ISD and my congressional district,” Welles says. "Hopefully my example will inspire others to work toward this national recognition too."
