Thinking Outside the Boxter
Best known for its prestigious line of luxury XJ sedans, Jaguar has officially thrown its hat back into the ring of making impressive sports cars. Making its American debut this summer, the 2014 Jaguar F-Type will cause more than a few people think outside the Boxter.
One of the season's highly anticipated new arrivals, the Jaguar F-Type represents a return to the company's heritage: a two-seat convertible sports car focused on performance and agility. The series of high performance cars makes use of more than 75 years of experience as the automaker makes its way — top down — to the head of the class.
As Jaguar goes toe-to-toe with Porsche, rubber hits the road with its powerful yet nimble 340-hp supercharged V6 engine. For those who need to leave a little extra rubber on the road, the 495-hp, 5-liter supercharged F-Type V8 S has a 0–60 mph time of 4.2 seconds — shaving close to an entire second from the base model's 5.1sec.
Bold, clean lines are prevalent throughout, from the front and side grills to the muscular rear haunch. On top, a lightweight, multilayer Thinsulate roof can be fully raised or lowered in just 12 seconds. With the top down or up, drivers will enjoy an aerodynamic rear spoiler that deploys at 60 mph and lowers to fit flush at lower speeds.
In the driver's seat, the classic sports car feel of wheel-mounted gearshift paddles melds with today's start-button technology into a high-tech cabin layout that focuses fully on the driver experience. With more horsepower than the rival Porsche Boxter (265 hp, MSRP $50,400), the F-Type also comes at a heftier price tag. But if performance and style are a must, then an MSRP of $69,000 is a small price to pay. And for those to whom money is no object, there is always the F-Type V8 starting at $92,000.
