Lauded as the Guiness Book of World Records’ bestselling two-seat sports car ever, the Mazda Miata MX-5 is about to top global sales of one million cars. Racing across that prestigious sales line is a new generation of design that has brought the car back to its loveable roots. When the first MX-5 Miata made its world debut at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show, it ushered in a new era of the fun and affordable roadster.
While much of the heritage of the MX-5 has remained through the years, the 2016 version has also adapted to the times. Despite its hightensile steel construction, the MX-5 is lighter and smaller than years past. Weighing in at 2,381 pounds, it is approximately 150 pounds lighter than the third-generation MX-5, and only 182 pounds heavier than the original model—an impressive accomplishment when you consider the technology and safety features of today’s cars.

Of more importance to roadster enthusiasts of yesterday and today, the new MX-5 is also faster than ever thanks to Mazda’s full suite of SKYACTIV Technology. More than just a catchphrase, SKYACTIV represents the design team’s focus on efficiencies that ultimately deliver an exhilarating and connected driving experience. The car’s 2.0-liter engine with standard manual transmission has been revamped to provide an impressive 155 horsepower and a zero to 60 mph time of 5.9 seconds – all with 25 percent greater fuel efficiency than its predecessor.
Defined by more than efficienc , the car’s body language speaks “agility” with a long hood, short overhangs, and a cropped cabin that appears to grip the road with its remarkably low profile The MX-5 Sport model is available for $24,915, but true enthusiasts may choose to spend a little more for the higher performance Club edition that comes with 17-inch wheels, Bilstein shocks, Brembro brakes and front and rear spoilers. Listed at $28,600, the Club edition also includes comfort technologies like a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, smart keyless entry, and a BOSE nine-speaker audio system with headrest-mounted speakers.
With nearly a million cars in the books, Mazda continues to improve upon the simplicity of its well known roadster. When driving an MX-5, even a day running errands is anything but a chore.
