It's no secret that Dragons have ample school spirit. That pride will be in full gear by the time homecoming rolls around.
This Friday, the halls of Carroll Senior High School will without a doubt be covered in glitter, feathers and ribbons. This tradition has spanned for decades, and Dragon moms are known for their mums.
However, you may notice downsized mums again this year.
Several years ago, a Carroll student named Destiny Rose came up with Mumz-4-Kidz, a program offering two different styles of traditional mums for purchase by the student body and the Southlake community. She created the program after noting that mums had gotten quite costly, and well, a little excessive. Rose saw that the money spent on something worn for a few hours could instead be directed to families in need. So, she came up with a model that would allow students to spend less and donate more. She has since graduated, but the program lives on at Carroll Senior High.
Customers can pick between a classic mum and a deluxe mum, which comes with personalization. Garters are also available upon request. Classic mums cost $15 while deluxe cost $20, a mere fraction of most mums that are popular now. Larger mums can exceed $400. A deluxe mum from Mumz-4-Kidz costs far less than what many people are spending on mums today. All proceeds from sales go towards the floral design department to help purchase supplies, as well as feeding families across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
This year, the advanced floral design class at Carroll Senior High will create mums for Mumz-4-Kidz program. Johanna Belwood, floral design teacher at the high school, says she believes this is a great way to bring back the traditional mums from years past.
"Mums have gotten to be crazy expensive and large," Belwood says. "I would like to see a return to more traditional mums, so much money is spent for just a single game and it seems a waste."
Belwood says that these downsized mums are also a great opportunity for younger Dragons to show their spirit at the homecoming game.
Mumz-4-Kidz has already sold over 60 mums, and have helped Dragons to show their pride this Friday at the homecoming game.
