Dawson Middle School eighth grade students Molly Forst and Margaret Thompson have been planning this week for quite some time. After hours upon hours designing table tents, getting restaurants on board and educating others on their cause, as of this Monday, the two Girl Scouts officially started their “No Straw Challenge.”
From April 19 through 28, Wildwood, Mango’s, Feedstore BBQ, Thailicious, Manny’s Uptown Tex-Mex, Tazikis, The Ginger Man, Unleavened Fresh Kitchen and Coolgreens will only serve straws upon request. Rather than automatically placing them in beverages, these local restaurants are partnering with Forst and Thompson in an effort to reduce waste.
Forst and Thompson are carrying out the project for their Silver Award, the high award that Girl Scout Cadettes can earn. They hope the challenge will raise awareness of the negative impact that plastic has on the environment and reduce plastic pollution on a larger scale.
