After the year the Dragons have had, it should come as no surprise that Southlake Carroll has placed a wide margin between first and second place for the Lone Star Cup. The final update, released by UIL on June 14, included points accrued from academics, softball and baseball. Returning with a state title, Dragon Baseball had a hand in earning Carroll its current total of 120 points. Currently in second, Austin Westlake has 104. Final results will be out on July 1.
The University Interscholastic League (UIL), the governing body over Texas High School athletic and academic competitions, created the Lone Star Cup in 1997. Since then, Southlake has been no stranger to bringing the award home.
The UIL Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications (1A through 6A), based on team performances in district and state championships. This includes State and Area Marching Band, Tennis, Team Tennis, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Girls and Boys Basketball, Soccer, Golf, Track & Field, Academics, One Act Play, Softball and Baseball performances.
The winning schools in each classification will receive the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship, also presented by the UIL.
The Dragons took second last year, as Conroe The Woodlands took the cup home. Southlake Carroll won its first cup in 4A competition during 2000-2001 school year and earned another in the same category the following year. The Dragons returned to the scene again in 2011-2012, this time as 5A, and continued to win the cup for the next three school years.
