Single moms now have a simpler path toward their college degree thanks to The Gatehouse’s new Education Track.
Founded in 2015, The Gatehouse Grapevine is an initiative of projectHandUp, a nonprofit that helps women overcome hardships and achieve permanent self-sustainability. As part of its initiative, The Gatehouse introduced its new Education Track, a solution-based program that gives a hand up to single-mom college students across DFW.
According to the press release, many women will be unable to complete their education because of the increasing cost of housing and childcare. A study by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research shows that only 8% of single mothers earn college degrees.
In response to this growing concern, The Gatehouse’s Education Track provides solutions tailored to each family, including housing, childcare, household expenses, financial planning, professional counseling, legal issues and more. By offering single moms the resources and tools to succeed, they can complete their college degree without having to work full time.
To qualify for the Education Track, single mothers in the DFW area must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program with less than 24 months remaining, be 21 years or older and have children aged 1 to 18. People can apply through the Education Track’s website.
“For many single moms, achieving a family sustainable wage is impossible without further education,” says The Gatehouse CEO and founder Lisa Rose. “Not only will this new Education Track help single moms achieve more and change the trajectory of their children’s lives, but this program can also help address some of the trained workforce gaps in our community. This is a win for everyone.”
