Quinn Ewers may be the name on everyone's mind today. But when it comes to quarterbacks, the Dragons have had a long history of star-studded ones like Chase Wasson, Chase Daniel and Greg McElroy. It’s only fitting that current head coach Riley Dodge had more than his fair share of accolades under the Friday night lights as well. But in terms of Dragon football legacies that were left on the field, few compare to that of three-year starter and state champion Kenny Hill — perhaps not until Quinn came onto the scene.
Kenny Hill, named the Dragons’ quarterback during his sophomore year in 2010, rose to the challenge by passing for 2,186 yards and 20 touchdowns in just his first season, leading the team to its longest postseason run in nearly a decade.
His skills only improved in 2011 when he completed 243 passes for 3,014 yards and 25 touchdowns, leading the team to its first 5A state championship win in five years. The accolades kept rolling as a senior when he accounted for 42 touchdowns and was named the state’s 2012 Player of the Year by the “The Fort Worth Star-Telegram,” the "Texas Associated Press" and Gatorade.
Like Kenny, Quinn was also named quarterback in his sophomore year and finished the season throwing 4,003 yards and 45 touchdowns, nearly doubling Kenny’s first-year stats. But in terms of approach and playing styles, Quinn and Kenny are vastly different.
While Kenny was a dual threat who also rushed for 22 touchdowns in his senior year, Quinn is a steady pocket presence who relies on long-distance accuracy for scoring, earning a 72% completion rate and committing only three interceptions in his first season.
Does that mean a championship is on the horizon for the Dragons? Possibly! But with a delayed season start and the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to be a looming concern, Quinn, a recent University of Texas commit, has a target on his back and is facing many more obstacles than Kenny did as a junior.
