If you were lucky enough to have abrseat at Dragon Stadium Friday night to for the clash of the titans matchupbrbetween Southlake Carroll (7-0) and Euless Trinity (7-1) than you definitelybrgot your money's worth. In another gamebrthat was decided by late game heroics, Carroll defeated Trinity 10-6 in frontbrof a capacity crowd. The win secured Southlake the top spot in the 7-6abrdistrict and handed the Trojans their first loss on the season. A classic battle between two of Texas' topbrfive teams— the win served as a good litmus test for a potential Dragon playoffbrrun.
Like Southlake vs. Trinity games of the past the outcome onbrFriday night was again determined in the final minutes. Following a pass interference call againstbrSouthlake, the Trojans were within the Dragon's 10-yard line with just over abrminute left in the game. After a run play on 3rd down put thebrTrojans inside the 5-yard line with 20 seconds left, the Trojans failed to getbrthe final play off before time expired. Players and fans alike went into abrfrenzy as the clock wound down on yet another extremely close Dragon victory.
As expected in this physical battle, the offensive load was placedbron the capable legs of junior running back Lil' Jordan Humphrey. Despite onlybrrushing for 29 yards in the first half Humphrey finished over the century markbrfor the sixth game in a row.. As thebrgame wore on he only got stronger and finished with 103 yards and the game'sbronly touchdown— a 2-yard red-zone power run with less than 4:00 left in thebrcontest. The would be controversial 4th and 2 call by Head Coach HalbrWasson proved to be the deciding factor in this hard fought game. Despite a few critical drops, quarterback RyanbrAgnew was able to overcome an early interception to lead the Dragons down thebrfield on the game winning drive. His 19-yard scamper on the all-important 3rdbrand 17 set up Humphrey's run and together the two plays decided put the Dragonsbrahead on the scoreboard for the first time all night. The senior quarterbackbrwho has the will to win when it matters most finished the game 18 of 28 for 178bryards.
Allowing just six points to a top ranked opponent, it goesbrwithout question that Tim Wasson's defense answered the call once again. After shutting out Richland last week, thebrDragon defense gave up only six points to a Trinity team that hadn't been heldbrwith out an offensive touchdown all season. Senior safety and Dragon Pride Player of the Game Kevin Cramer led thebrDragons with 16 tackles and a critical early fourth quarter interception asbrTrinity attempted to go for it on a fourth down in Dragons territory. Senior Safety Andy Chelf whose aggressivebrtackling ability resonated all game finished second on the team with 15brtackles.
“They hurt us early on the sweep, but we made adjustments,” saidbrcornerback and team captain TariqbrGordon. “In the 2nd half webrwilled ourselves to hold a great offense to no points, and gave our offense abrchance to put points up. [It was] a great team win.”
