The Southlake Carroll Dragons (5-0) look to keep their undefeated district streak alive as they face the Byron Nelson Bobcats (0-5) tonight in Trophy Club.
The Dragons still sit at the top of the District 5-6A rankings and moved up one spot from No. 8 to No. 7 on the Texas 6-A state rankings after they defeated the Denton Guyer Wildcats 33-29 last Friday.
Southlake Carroll is now halfway through the 2018 season with five wins under their belt from both non-district and district play. In the coming weeks, Carroll will face Keller Fossil Ridge, Keller Central, V.R Eaton and Timber Creek. If the Dragons continue their undefeated streak through the remainder of the season, they are a sure bet for the 2018 6A playoffs.
So far this season, the Dragons have just under 2,000 total offensive yards – 686 passing and 1,246 rushing and 24 touchdowns. Senior running back TJ McDaniel holds the most rushing yards with 801. The Dragons have favored running the ball, with 20 total rushing touchdowns on the season and averaging just under 250 rushing yards per game.
Last season, Denton Guyer fell to Byron Nelson in an upset during the Division II playoffs. The Bobcats bowed out of the playoffs in the bi-district round of their respective brackets.
The Dragons defeated the Bobcats in their last two meetings 44-13 in 2017 and 50-17 in 2017.
Even though Byron Nelson currently sits at the bottom of the District 5-6A standings, they are still considered an underlying threat for the Dragons.
The Byron Nelson offense is firing this season, as they returned a total of four offensive linemen and three receivers this season.
The Bobcats are known for running the ball, but the Dragon defense will need to contain both the run and pass game this Friday.
The Bobcat offense is rotating two quarterbacks this season – junior Parker Turley and sophomore Hudson White. Turley has a total of 541 passing yards, four touchdowns and a 50 percent completion rate so far this season, while White has 312 yards, four touchdowns and a 46 percent completion rate. Both have thrown four interceptions each.
Both quarterbacks will be looking for senior wide receiver Calvin Wiggins Jr., who has a total of 331 yards and four touchdowns for the Bobcats. Wiggins has already received college offers from Kansas, Navy and multiple others.
Quarterback Will Bowers and the Dragon offense will need to keep plays sharp and passing dynamic Friday, as the Byron Nelson defense has already forced six interceptions on the season. The Bobcats have also recorded a total of six sacks – senior John Harvey leading the defense with two sacks.
The Dragons and Bobcats will kick off at 7:00 PM at Northwest ISD Stadium.
