Before the season began, Southlake Carroll head coach HalbrWasson wasn't exactly worried, but he was a little concerned.
Due to conference realignment, the Dragons ended up in onebrof the toughest districts in the state with teams like Coppell, Euless Trinity and Colleyville Heritage Wasson knew winning another district title was not abrforgone conclusion.
Fast forward a few months later, and the nationally ranked Dragons are enbrroute to winning an outright district title. The path was certainly grueling, but itbrmade the Dragons stronger than ever.
“If we can win the district outright, it would be abrtremendous accomplishment. We play in an extremely competitive district andbrplayed one of the toughest schedules to date,” Wasson said. “We overcame a lotbrof adversity, and it would be a special thing to finish 10-0.”
The only thing standing in the way of Southlake Carroll andbrits ultimate goal is Hurst L.D. Bell. Although the Raiders have produced somebrsolid teams in the past, 2014 has been a down year.
But Wasson says his team will in no way be looking pastbrthem. The playoffs are still a week away. The focus right now is Hurst L.D.Bell and a perfect regular season.
“We never change our mindset. Like I've been saying allbryear, the next game is the biggest game. It doesn't change,” Wasson said.br“There is no doubt the playoffs are coming. But we have to focus on ourselvesbrand getting better. We've had the same mindset since before the season.”
Hurst L.D. Bell looks to play the part of spoiler. But thebrfact of the matter is the Raiders have been downright awful at times thisbrseason. Hurst L.D. Bell opened the season with seven straight losses beforebrnotching its first victory last week at Haltom.
The Raiders, however, are hungry to pull the upset and wouldbrlove nothing more than to hand Southlake Carroll its first loss of the season.
In order to do that, the offense, which operates out of thebrspread, has to get going. The Raiders average just 14.3 points per game.brRunning back Daniel Dorsett has been the lone bright spot with 939 yards andbrfive touchdowns on the ground. The defense hasn't been much better, giving upbr43 points per contest.
“They've been having their issues, but L.D. Bell looks likebra good team. They are extremely physical,” Wasson said. “We're going to have tobrget on them early or they are going to get after you. We are going to have tobrcreate doubt in them early. We just have to keep improving our blocking and catching.brWe have to be more consistent. The best news is we haven't reached our ceilingbryet.”
