Season Update
Gold medal finishesbrand a No. 7 state ranking
With the longevity of coaches Matt Glenn and assistant JonbrYoungblood, both the boys and girls teams run like well-oiled machines. Underbrthe leadership of the well-respected duo, the Lady Dragons remain focused onbrthe FACTS (family, accountability, commitment, tenaciousness and success), abrphilosophy that brought home back-to-back state championships in 2008 and 2009.brThe team is off to a fast start as they strive to get back atop the state leaderboard.brWith five seniors on the squad and an impressive No. 7 ranking in the state, therebrare a lot of expectations on this year’s team. So far, the girls have finishedbrin the top three in a number of tournaments on the season, including the VanessabrCole Memorial, the Rawls Preview and the Marcus Invitational, where theybrfinished third out of 24 teams. They’ve regularly been in in the mix, alsobrplacing fifth in the Byron Nelson Spring Classic. Along the way, the ladiesbrkeep getting better — they recently took home the gold at the Regional Previewbrin Lubbock.
About the team
A pair of seniors who look to build upon excellent juniorbryears lead the team into the spring 2014 season. Leah Meza and Adriana Morillobrhave both stepped up their play in recent weeks. Meza currently has the team'sbrbest scoring average at 78.67 and fired her best round of 75 at the MidlothianbrSpring Cup at Tangle Ridge in late March. brRunning mate Morillo isn't far behind with a scoring average of 80.31. JuniorbrChristina Gilchrest, the younger sister of former boys star Matt Gilchrest, brleads the team in 18 hole rounds played (11.5). Some of the younger teambrmembers are also turning into fine golfers — sophomore Ellie Youree is turningbrinto a solid number three for the team. At the Regional Previews in early March, brshe guided the team to a first-place finish with rounds of 78 and 80. Just a freshman,brAthisha Piyapanee has shown a competitive charge thebrteam will make use of for years to come. The district tournament begins inbrearly April, and there is little doubt that these girls will be ready.
