A Carroll Dragon baseball graduate will be lining up to the plate this Friday as a starting pitcher against the Texas Rangers. That player is Detroit Tigers pitcher Tyler Alexander.
Graduating from Carroll High School in 2014, Alexander went 12-1 with a .66 earned run average during his senior year, striking out 177 batters in 94.2 innings, according to “The Dallas Morning News.” He was also named the newspaper's Baseball Pitcher of the Year in 2013.
While he was later drafted by the Tigers in the 23rd round of the Major League Baseball draft, he didn’t sign with them and instead opted to play college baseball for the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs.
Alexander became the first freshman since 2010 to lead the team in victories on campus, going 10-3 in his first season with a 2.36 ERA in 20 games, as previously recorded in Southlake Style.
"Playing baseball or any sport at Southlake, you play at such a high level with so much expectation to win and get better," Alexander said to Southlake Style in 2015. "There’s so much competition in your sport within your position. It makes you a lot better. It prepares you not only to be able to play at the D1 level but to play good."
Alexander struck out 59 and walked 11 in 99 innings his freshman year, holding opponents to a .239 batting average. He also helped his team capture its first Big 12 championship in 2014, thanks to his 3.08 ERA 4-2.
After his sophomore season, Alexander was drafted by the Tigers again in the second round of the 2015 MLB draft. He debuted with the team earlier this year during their game against the White Sox on July 3.
The Tigers previously played against the Rangers in June and lost 3-1. Alexander will pitch against the Rangers on their home turf at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 3 at the Globe Life Park.
