Seven Sign on the Dotted Line
By Robert Halliman
Signing day is a day in which the dream continues. As millions of high school athletes acrossbrthe world compete to make it to the collegiate level and advance their athletic careers only few are chosen to sign the coveted letter of intent. As one of the nation's top High Schools, Southlake Carroll's tradition speaks forbritself as the Dragon athletics program has kept up the tradition of funnelingbrmany of its athletes to continue their education and athletic prowess atbruniversities across the country. Today, bron National Signing Day, seven more Dragons signed their letters of intent. Family, friends and coaches gathered as thesebrseven student athletes joined their fellow seniors, 29 in all from the class ofbr2014-15 who will take their game and their education to the next level.
Head Coach Hal Wasson has a long history in helping hisbrfootball players achieve their goals to play at the next level with this yearbrbeing no different. Five Football players signed scholarships to continue theirbrfootball career, with three of his players signing to play at the Division 1Abrlevel, Quarterback Ryan Agnew (San Diego St.), Nose Tackle King Newton (Universitybrof Texas at San Antonio), and Defensive back Andy Chelf (Purdue). Two more football players signed Letters ofbrIntent Wednesday with defensive back Tariq Gordon continuing his college careerbrat Lamar University and Offensive Tackle Grant Stewart choosing to attend thebrColorado School of Mines.
“You're excited for the players and you're excited for thebrfamilies because it's really difficult to get a college scholarship,” said HeadbrCoach Hal Wasson. “Less than threebrpercent get college football scholarships, its great for the kids, its greatbrfor their parents and definitely their teammates.”
After leading the Dragons to the fourth round of thebrplayoffs this past season, Quarterback Ryan Agnew is excited about hisbropportunity to continue playing the game he loves, with new scenery andbrexperiences in his future.
“I am looking forward to expanding myself and going awaybrfrom home and seeing how I will evolve with so much change coming fast,” saidbrAgnew.
The Southlake boys and girls soccer teams also producedbrathletes who signed Letters of Intent and will be playing soccerbrcollegiately. On the boys side Ricardo Becerrabrsigned with Bryant University in Rhode Island, while Paige Johnson made itbrofficial signing on to four years with Utah.
“I'm proud of Paige for the hard work she has put forthbrtowards her college scholarship and the efforts that she put in in thebrclassroom as well ass the field to receive a college scholarship,” said Girls SoccerbrHead Coach Renae Osborne.
