To throw a 12-pound metal ball at record distances, one needs strength and technique. Both of those attributes were on full display at the UIL state championship shot put competition held last weekend at The University of Texas’ Mike Myers Stadium.
Southlake Carroll junior Bowen Fleming has continued to one-up himself in the shot put all season long. At the Southlake Carroll Invitational in February, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Bowen, threw a distance of 50-feet-6, which he then followed up in April by throwing 55-feet-6.75 at the UIL regional competition. However, he saved his best for last throwing for a personal record of 59-feet-9.75 to place third in the state 6A competition behind Evan Martinez of Arlington Lamar (62-feet-8) and Adam Carter of Katy (60-feet-6.75).
