Former Carroll Dragon and current Rice University pitcher Matt Canterino Jr. is on the 2019 USA Golden Spikes Midseason Watch List.
The USA Golden Spikes Award is given to the top amateur baseball player in the nation. Former winners include Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies, Andrew Benintendi of the Boston Red Sox and Trevor Bauer of the Cleveland Indians.
Currently in his junior collegiate season, Canterino Jr.’s stats include a 3.32 earned run average, a 4-4 record and a total of 59.2 innings pitched. Baseball Prospect Journal reports that he’s a “well-regarded prospect” for the MLB draft in June.
Also on the Golden Spikes Midseason Watch list is Colleyville Heritage High School shortstop and right-handed pitcher Bobby Witt Jr. Witt Jr., who is the son of former MLB pitcher Bobby Witt. He has already verbally committed to play college baseball at Oklahoma.
Witt Jr. is considered a top draft prospect and the MLB 2019 Prospect Watch has him at number two.
The next step in the USA Golden Spikes Award process begins on May 15 when the midseason watch list will be narrowed down to 25 semifinalists. Then beginning from May 15 to May 26, a 200 voter body consisting of national baseball media, professional baseball personnel and previous Golden Spike Award winners among others, will select three finalists.
It will be from that pool of three finalists that, from May 29 through June 10, the same voting body will vote on, choosing one finalist to be the winner. The 2019 USA Golden Spikes Award will be presented to the winner on June 14 on ESPN.
