Carroll Cross Country is on itsbrway to the State Championship. At the Class 6A Region I meet in Lubbock lastbrweekend, both girls and boys teams placed first. For the sixth consecutivebryear, the boy's team captured first place and a state meet bid, and for the 20thbrconsecutive year, the Lady Dragons earned a spot in the championship statebrrace. Despite the tough three-mile course at Mae Simmons Park, known for itsbrsteep hills and tight turns, the Dragon runners came out strong and persevered.
“Our boys and girls ran a great race and it took a totalbrteam effort to get it done,” said head coach Justin Leonard. “We understandbrthat this meet was just another step towards our ultimate goal. We have Statebrin two weeks and we are excited to have the opportunity to compete against thebrstate's best.”
Reed Brown was the Regionalbrchamp, taking first place with an impressive time of 14:47. Nicolas Fernandesbrwas next coming in 11th place, Charlie Gardner came in 15th,brEvan Dunkel 33rd and Connor Rutledge finishes out the scoringbrpositions in 35th place. EnzobrMortimer (73rd) and Nate Lannen (93rd) alsobrcompeted. The Dragon boys team scored 82brpoints, El Paso Eastwood took second (127 points), Northwest Nelson was thirdbr(131 points) and Flower Mound came in fourth (154 points) and all will advancebrto the Championship State Meet.
The Lady Dragons ran a brilliantbrrace, scoring just 41 points with all scoring runners placing in the top 20.brGillian Mortimer crossed the line in third place, Cate Tracht was right behindbrin fourth, Ali White was next in eighth place, Arianna Lopez came in 12thbrand Sofia Santamaria placed 17th to complete the scoring runners.brAngie Riera (24th) and Sarah McCabe (39th) alsobrcompeted. Also moving on to the state meet was second place Keller (52 points),brthird place Lewisville Hebron (120 points) and fourth place Marcus (128 points).
