Under head coach Robyn McCoart, the Southlake girls' basketball team has been dominating district competition. The 23-24 season was proof as the Lady Dragons compiled a 12-0 record for its second straight undefeated district season on its way to a 31-6 overall record. Even though the season has ended, the team continues to shine during postseason recognition.
Milania Jordan, who scored her 1,000th point midseason, was crowned district MVP and second team all-area by "The Dallas Morning News" after the junior averaged over 17 points and almost four rebounds per game, placing her as one of the area’s top scorers.
“Milania is a phenomenal leader and basketball player in our program,” McCoart says. “She is so deserving of this honor. It is wonderful to see her recognized by those in our district and the surrounding community for her commitment and dedication to the game of basketball.”
The spotlight wasn't fixed solely on Milania, however. The collective might of the Jordan sisters Gianna, Natalia and Nadia, who each earned a place as First-Team selections. Although basketball is the ultimate team sport, it is rare to find four sisters on the same team all achieving first-team honors. The honors ensure the Lady Dragons will continue to see success for years to come.
A standout year for Taryn Barnes also didn't go unnoticed. The senior forward was also a First-Team selection, rounding out the team’s starting five and securing the extremely rare team-wide recognition.
Efficiency was the name of the game as the Lady Dragons ranked fifth in North Texas, scoring 60.5 points per game while giving up just 42.5 points per game. Its stats like this that also afforded McCoart and her coaching staff to be recognized as the district’s best.
“Our staff success is a reflection of our entire program,” McCoart says. “Our players, parents and fans are also receiving this award. We are 100% committed to our team culture and values of uncommon attitude and effort and have a positive growth mindset for our program.”
