Colleyville is grilling up a good time this Saturday. For the first time, the city of Colleyville and its police department will host the Old Tyme Steak Cookoff, a daylong event where participants grill off to see who has the best steak in the city.
Colleyville assistant police chief Hillary Wreay says they’ve been hosting the Old Tyme Cookoff for more than 20 years, but the previous events took place over three days and involved barbecue. This is the first cookoff where it will take place one day only and is specific to steak grilling.
“Originally it was just the police department that put this on,” Hillary says. “We started this by selling hot dogs in front of a grocery store. Over the last few years, the city got really involved and helped us bring in bigger bands and more community involvement.”
Besides the steak cookoff, the event will feature food trucks, a fall market, raffles, a kids area with face painting, bounce houses and a live band lineup including Heritage Bridge, PB & J, Monkey Love and Walker County. The cookoff will also feature a kids cookoff, where children can compete to see who can grill the best.
“Every time I come to this, more people bring more of their family and friends to experience this,” Hillary says. “It’s great to see them just grow up. I may see these kids from years ago, and now they’re adults grilling themselves.”
The event is free and open to the public. A $25 donation will grant you access to the VIP area with complimentary food and drinks and will benefit the Special Olympics Texas organization as well. Registration for cookoff competitors is $150 for adults and $10 for children. If you would like to register, go online at Colleyville.com/Cookoff.
