Dallas' own Peticolas Brewing was named the Grand National Champion at the 2018 U.S. Open Beer Championship and was ranked No. 1 brewery in the country. The Design District brewery received word about their honor on Monday, July 9, and their individual awards for their submissions.
"We've participated in five or six years, and we've won medals before. We have shown up in their Top 10 list before, but nothing like what happened [Monday],” owner and operator of Peticolas Brewing Company Michael Peticolas says. “It was totally unexpected.”
During the 2018 competition, the brewery received gold medals for their Velvet Hammer Imperial Red Ale, Black Curtains Imperial Stout and Great Scot! Scottish Ale. Their Royal Scandal English Pale Ale and Sledge Hammer American Barley Wine received silver medals in their categories.
The competition included more than 6,300 beers in 110 different styles. And judges, spread throughout England, Canada and the United States, blindly tasted these various brews and narrowed down their favorites to award 377 medals to home-brewers and professional breweries alike.
“It fills us with pride,” Peticolas says. “We are doing what we are setting out to do and getting it done. Next week we got to start working on doing it all over again. It's time to rinse and repeat.”
Locals can come out to their tri-level taproom in the Design District to try 18 of their beers on tap from Tuesday to Sunday.
“You can try it right there from the source,” Peticolas says. “It doesn't get any fresher than that.”
